The Vee

I like The Vee, the distinctive meeting place of two hills in West Waterford (well technically it’s in Co. Tipperary but what’s 100m between friendly counties? ;)) Siân and myself took a trip up there recently to see the scenic beauty and swung by Melleray Abbey on the way back where I saw a nice tree stump in the abbey grounds.

Well worth the visit if you get the time. I always try to explore the West of the county as much as I can, some great sights right on our doorstep.

Just to correct your geography.! What you think is the Vee is in fact “The Gap” otherwise “The Bohawn” (forgive the anglicization). The Vee is the hairpin bend, on the North side of the Sugarloaf, just below my Great Grandfathers’ grave. Actually you are not alone in thinking this, some describing the area around the Mountain Barrack as being “on the Vee”.

Thanks for that update. You’ve unsettled my mind now having lived all my life thinking that the meeting of the two hills was actually The Vee and hence the name. As you say I’m not alone in this misperception as I’ve never met anyone who has told me different, although I guess that the difference is subtle between The Vee Gap and The Vee – easily mixed up or let go as being interchangeable.
Nice site by the way and it’s great to see some of Ireland’s natural beauty brought to the web for all to discover. Thanks again for the correction.

Thanks Seamus. It’s a great trip, up around that area. Some fantastic countryside on our own doorsteps. If you’re passing home via Cappoquin, make sure to stop off at Barron’s Bakery Tea Room for some refreshment (http://www.barronsbakery.ie/). They make the cakes that have sadly disappeared from Waterford’s streets since the bakeries closed down to make way for the supermarkets. Enjoy the weekend – hopefully the weather holds up for you.
