Messing around with a digicam, a laptop, and some video capture software, produces some interesting results. No after effects added, just simple feedback on the audio and the video to create a dynamic, recursive effect, he unashamedly says could be confused with 2001 A Space Odyssey.
Seriously though, it’s amazing what you get for free with no software.

Alas, poor George gave up the ghost just before lunchtime today. Although his lifespan with us was 5 years longer than most Goldfish last, it still seemed very short. In his time he overcame a disfiguring bone problem and came back from near death, twice. He faught valliantly and despite every effort his short illness of the past week took its toll. Goodbye old friend – enjoy the big pond in the sky!

Sitting down earlier today I was idly flicking channels when I came across Destination Moon on Film 4. One of those classic sci-fis that were truly ahead of their time. Shot in the 50′s, prior to the Moon Landing it was incredibly prescriptive of Apollo 11′s later voyage. Anyhow all praise aside, when the point in the movie arrived such that Earth made contact with the moon landing crew, the host of the radio show cut in and explained to the audience why there was a delay in the response received from the astronauts. He said, ”It takes 3 seconds, even at the speed of light, for radio waves to reach the Earth from the Moon”. I smiled

As much as it pains me to say it, my plans to run this year’s Dublin Marathon have come to an end because of injury. Despite trying to battle back to fitness, even short distance runs are leaving me crippled and I cannot entertain the idea of a 10 mile or more jog.
So with deep regret I withdraw my ambition for this year and postpone it until 2010 when I will no doubt be wrapping myself in cotton wool until the big day.

Just a quick thought before I watch George Lee disect the doom and gloom of blowing the boom. This weekend has seen a truly wonderful couple of days for Irish sport. The national rugby team completed an historic grand slam victory in the 6 Nations by defeating Wales in what was truly the most tense game of rugby I have ever seen and Bernard Dunne faught through an incredible battle to win the Super-Bantamweight World Champion belt in boxing. In a time of recession and societal depression, again I turn to my TV to watch George, our nation’s sports stars have not only achieved personal glory and greatness on the world stage, they have lit a beacon of hope, a focal point of happiness to lift the spirits of the Irish people. Roughly 25 people who have not changed a single thing about our economy have done more for the Irish people in one day than our entire government has done in 2 years. Says it all really… Nevertheless, well done lads, you did us all very proud.

Yes, the recession busting font is here. A new eco-friendly font that uses 20% less ink when printing documents is now freely available to all. Just what we need in times of recession and also in terms of our environmental conscience. It’s a simple yet brilliant idea. I’ll definitely be using it for future printing where possible and perhaps it should be a consideration of others who create large documents for printing too? Enjoy eco-font!

In 1997 I was given a present of a T-Shock, at first I was really happy with my T-Shock but as time went on I discovered that it was less and less pleasing. Initially I thought my T-Shock made me look good and that it made the people around me happy but then I discovered that this was down to other external factors such as an economic boom in my country at the same time and nothing to do with my T-Shock.
However, I said that I’d stick with it and see how it went for a while. Sadly though people started asking me simple things, simple facts like what time and what date and I just couldn’t get a straight answer from my T-Shock. It still looked good and was presentable but it just wasn’t performing its function. I tried contacting customer service twice and I was in a holding queue for 5 years at a time and each time to no resolve, they refused to replace my T-Shock as the problems I was reporting were not caused by the T-Shock itself but something else they couldn’t tell me. Customer service, eh!
10 years on though and I still have my T-Shock and despite not being able to get a straight answer from it and generally being dissatisfied with the acquisition of data from it I have to say one thing. It has a fantastic ability to resist any awkward situation, any pressure no matter how far it is out of the depth that it is rated for. It has never suffered a scratch despite numerous rough encounters. No matter what it gets put through, it still comes out looking shiny and new. However, there’s a twist in the tale: It turns out that the person who bought my T-Shock for me was not the only person who allegedly bought the T-Shock. That makes me angry and I no longer want my T-Shock, it’s by far the most disappointing thing that has ever happened to me.
In summary, I would not recommend anyone to buy a T-Shock. They might look good on the outside and come from a good line of market leaders but ultimately the T-Shock is a constant let down and its scratch resistance is only a gimmick to divert your attention away from the more serious issues of it not doing its job. Very disappointing indeed.

Poor Bertie; he’s gone to the high court to challenge the constitutionality of the Mahon tribunal’s usage of his Dail statements. You’ve got to hand it to the man, he always makes it sound like he’s protecting the country even when he’s clearly got his own interests at heart. Of course he insists that he’s undergoing possible personal expense to protect the constitution. I vote we change the constitution to allow this investigation and let the tribunal find out exactly what Bertie is trying to hide. Who’s with me?

I recently purchased a new iMac from Apple computers with a 24″ screen. I hoped it would be good and it is; it’s really good.

Some weeks ago I finally splashed out on a new iMac from Apple. After plenty of deliberation I managed to persuade myself to go for the 24″ model rather than its smaller 20″ and 17″ cousins. I went for the real estate on the screen instead of upgrading items such as a graphics card, hard drive, as I thought it was a better investment of my cash. The base system comes with a 250GB drive anyhow so anything outside of that should really be heading for third party NAS or USB connected device. Unless that is of course that you do a serious amount of video editing. I also went for the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse option for no other reason than I thought it looked cool to have no cables other than a power lead.
I also went for the 2.16 Core 2 Duo processor rather than spending several hundred extra on the 2.33 for the sake of a couple of clock ticks. To be honest I don’t think I would even notice the difference. I have 2GB of RAM in the machine and it runs very smoothly indeed. Applications like Garageband, iMovie and iDVD all run much smoother than they did on the old G4 hardware as much as I still pine for the glory days. Even Aperture with all of its resource hogging runs quite smoothly for processing RAW images from my Canon EOS. It did take Aperture quite some time to create all the thumbnails and finish processing the 10s of GB of photos that I have on my NAS drive. Looks wise, the iMac is truly an archetype of beauty in terms of computers. The screen simply blows me away – it’s a little too bright on the default setting but you can adjust this in the system properties. The built-in Bluetooth and WiFi options come as standard and are very welcome as I’m sure that the iMac will at some stage in its life be carted about the house as an entertainment unit. The built-in speakers and more powerful amp that only comes with the 24″ model are decent enough but you’ll never beat the quality of external speakers for a computer. Overall I have no regrets with my purchase, a slight curiousity as to what 3GB of RAM would do for me but no real desire to change anything. Do yourself a favour and buy one!
