Although over your side of the pond the EVO 4G might be the good option. The Hero is great but the processor does lag behind the market leaders. Android as a platform though is very nice indeed. I only started looking at android development tutorials recently and was amazed at how easy it was for a java developer to adapt to developing android apps. There is a much steeper learning curve to create iPhone apps.
